In this episode, we will talk about that pesky union with Sweden, lasting from 1814-1905. We will talk about the nascent modern state in Norway, Norwegian nationalism, and tensions with the Swedes that finally led to full independence in 1905. Let\u2019s start.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unionen med Sverige, 1814-1905<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Som vi s\u00e5 i forrige episode begynte unionen med Sverige etter en krig i 1814. Unionen var ikke \u00f8nsket i Norge. Men unionen med Sverige var ikke lik unionen med Danmark. Alt ble ikke styrt fra Sverige, slik det var i unionen med Danmark. Faktisk ble mesteparten styrt fra Norge. Norge fikk beholde grunnloven sin. Dette betydde at Norge fikk sitt eget parlament, Stortinget, og sin egen regjering. Norge fikk endelig bestemme mesteparten selv.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men kongen og utenrikstjenesten var alts\u00e5 lik mellom Norge og Sverige. Men i innenrikssaker, alts\u00e5 saker som har med Norge \u00e5 gj\u00f8re, fikk Norge endelig bestemme selv. Unionen med Sverige var alts\u00e5 veldig ulik unionen med Danmark. I unionen med Danmark ble nesten alt bestemt fra K\u00f8benhavn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men selv om unionen med Sverige betydde mye frihet for Norge, var de aller fleste i Norge misforn\u00f8yde med unionen. I Norge \u00f8nsket man ikke union. Det var nok p\u00e5 grunn av alt som skjedde i 1814 (se forrige episode), at unionen begynte med en krig mellom Norge og Sverige og at Norge begynte \u00e5 bygge sin egen nasjonale identitet p\u00e5 1800-tallet. Norsk nasjonalisme begynte \u00e5 vokse fram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For eksempel ble det st\u00f8rre fokus p\u00e5 \u00e5 finne \u201cdet norske\u201d. However, it wasn&#8217;t a desired arrangement in Norway. It&#8217;s important to note that this union was distinct from the earlier union with Denmark. Unlike the Danish union, Sweden didn&#8217;t govern Norway directly. Instead, the majority of governing authority resided in Norway. This meant that Norway retained its own constitution, establishing its independent institutions like the Storting (parliament) and a dedicated government. It was a significant step towards self-determination for Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the king and the foreign service were shared by Norway and Sweden, which meant that matters related to foreign affairs were decided from Stockholm. Conversely, decisions regarding domestic issues, specific to Norway, were made within the country itself. This made the union with Sweden markedly different from the previous one with Denmark, where most decisions were centralized in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the increased autonomy the union with Sweden provided, many in Norway were still discontented. The desire for autonomy stemmed from the events of 1814 (as discussed in the previous episode). The union had, after all, begun with a war between Norway and Sweden. In addition, the 19th century saw the cultivation of a specific and unique Norwegian national identity. This fermented the Norwegian desire for independence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a time of heightened emphasis on discovering and celebrating &#8220;the Norwegian.&#8221; A new written form of Norwegian, known as &#8220;Nynorsk,&#8221; was developed alongside efforts to make Danish more Norwegian, leading to the evolution of what we now know as Bokm\u00e5l. Artists focused on capturing the essence of Norwegian landscapes. Figures like Asbj\u00f8rnsen and Moe journeyed throughout Norway, gathering local myths and folktales. The bunad, Norway&#8217;s traditional national costume, gained popularity. Historians began chronicling &#8220;Norwegian history,&#8221; and a distinct Norwegian flag was adopted. This surge of Norwegian nationalism served as a unifying force, rallying Norwegians around a collective national identity that was distinctly Norwegian, rather than Swedish or Danish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the newfound freedoms afforded by the union with Sweden, discontent persisted. In 1905, after nearly a century, Norway decided it was time for a change. They no longer wished to align their foreign policy with Sweden&#8217;s, and they sought the ability to make their own trade agreements and alliances with other nations. On June 7, 1905, the Storting declared Norway&#8217;s intention to break away from the union with Sweden and establish itself as an independent nation. A referendum was held, and an overwhelming 99.99% of voters favored independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden did threaten Norway with war, but ultimately, no armed conflict ensued. The dissolution of the union was achieved without violence. Thus, in 1905, Norway emerged as an independent nation and opted to become a monarchy. Christian Frederik Carl Georg Valdemar Axel, a prince of Denmark, was chosen as the Norwegian king.
