Mange i russetida drikker veldig mye alkohol.

Russetida (English)

Russetida, the celebration of graduation from upper secondary school, happens from the first to 17th of May, the national day of Norway. The students will then take on red clothes, a red russe hat and hand out russe cards, which many children collect. These cards will often contain a funny picture and quote from the person who hands it out. The russetid is also celebrated with a lot of partying and alcohol, and the russ have their own festivals and parties.

But the russetid is not only about partying. It is also about having fun in other ways, for example the russeknuter, challenges. Doing a challenge gives you a prize that you can fasten to your russe hat. Some examples of challenges in 2022 were:

To sit under your desk the whole lesson

Change your dialect for a whole day

Tent in the garden of a teacher

Drink 24 beer cans in 24 hours

Have sex with five different people during the russetid

Many different challenges in other words.

Many russ will make groups with a group name, group merchandise, group clothes, a group logo, and sometimes, even a buss, a so called russebuss. The buss is painted and styled and is used to go around the country to party. Some groups will even make their own song, a so-called russesang. These are very sexualized and is often about partying, drinking a lot of alcohol, and having sex with beautiful girls. Many have criticised them, but they are popular among the russ.

Many look forward to their russetid, but many has also criticized the tradition. The russetid used to be after the exams, but now, the exams are after the russetid. That means that many people will party for almost a month before their most important exams, leading to much worse grades than they would have gotten without partying so much.

Another criticism is that the russetid focuses way too much on alcohol. Many russ drink way too much for a prolonged period of time, something that is very unhealthy and increases the risks of alcoholism. Many feels excluded if they don’t join in the drinking.

Another problem is that the russetid is highly sexualised, especially against girls. Songs encourage boys to sleep with as many girls as possible. Also, the language is very explicit sexually.

The russetid is not cheap either, to say the least. Many buy russ clothing, merchandise, they join festivals, buy alcohol, and even a buss. Some people start to save money already from their first year of vidergående, upper secondary.

Vocabulario:

Feiring – Celebration

Elev – Student

Vidergående skole – Upper secondary school

Videre utdanning – Further studies (at a university)

Foregår – Happens

Lue – Hat

Sitat – Quote

Å feste – To party

Gjenstand – Thing

Pult – Desk

Gjeng – Gang

Rundt omkring – All around

Å glede seg – To look forward to

Sunt – Healthy

Oppfordrer – Encourages

Å ligge med – To sleep with

Pupper – Boobies

Rompe – Ass

Å spare – To save (e.g. money)

Russetida, the celebration of graduation from upper secondary school, happens from the first to 17th of May, the national day of Norway.
