In this first episode, I will give you a general overview of early modern and modern history in Norway from the sixteenth century until today. I denne perioden var det flere store kriger mellom Danmark-Norge og Sverige. Krigene endte som regel ganske jevnt og med at begge ble svekket. Men Sverige klarte \u00e5 ta Sk\u00e5ne fra Danmark, dagens S\u00f8r-Sverige, og Jemtland, Herjedalen og B\u00e5huslen fra Norge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opplysningstiden<\/strong> kommer til Danmark-Norge med nye ideer. <strong>Skolesystemet<\/strong> i Norge blir bedre og flere l\u00e6rer \u00e5 lese og skrive. <strong>Potetprestene<\/strong> sprer poteten og f\u00e6rre d\u00f8r av sult. Norsk-dansken Ludvig Holberg skriver flere kjente teaterstykker og er den fremste opplysningsmannen fra Norge og Danmark.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Slutten av 1780 og utover 1800-tallet er i Norge en periode preget av nasjonalisme og <strong>nasjonsbygging<\/strong>. Perioden er preget av:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Norge f\u00e5r sin egen <strong>grunnlov<\/strong> og erkl\u00e6rer selvstendighet i 1814. Selvstendigheten varer bare i fem m\u00e5neder da Norge blir tvunget inn i en <strong>union<\/strong> med Sverige. Likevel f\u00e5r landet beholde sin <strong>grunnlov<\/strong> og Norge har en langt sterkere posisjon enn under Danmark.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Utover 1800-tallet begynner man \u00e5 bygge en nasjonal identitet i Norge. Norge f\u00e5r sitt eget skriftspr\u00e5k igjen, <strong>nynorsk<\/strong> og senere bokm\u00e5l. Norske forfattere skriver om Norge og hva det vil si \u00e5 v\u00e6re nordmann. Norske malere maler en idealisert versjon av norske b\u00f8nder i norsk natur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Den industrielle revolusjonen<\/strong> kommer til Norge i l\u00f8pet av 1800-tallet. Norge f\u00e5r sin f\u00f8rste industri, jernbane og g\u00e5r fra et fattig bondesamfunn til et middels rikt og moderne europeisk land.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00f8rste del av 1900-tallet i Norge er preget av f\u00f8rste og andre verdenskrig i Europa. Men dette er ogs\u00e5 viktig for utviklingen av det moderne Norge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Norge blir selvstendig fra Sverige i 1905 etter 100 \u00e5r i <strong>union<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flere og flere f\u00e5r <strong>stemmerett<\/strong> i Norge. P\u00e5 slutten av 1800-tallet f\u00e5r alle menn over 25 \u00e5r <strong>stemmerett<\/strong>. Det hjelper mye. \u00b4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Overview of Modern Norwegian History<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The 16th and 17th centuries in Norway were characterized by three central developments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>The introduction of the Reformation in Norway, which led to the establishment of the school system in the 17th century. Reading and understanding faith in one&#8217;s own language became important, and many people learned to read and write. However, Protestantism also resulted in witch-hunts during the 17th century, where individuals were accused and killed for being &#8220;witches.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Centralization of power of the Danish king. Danish noblemen and the Danish king gained more power in Norway during the 16th and 17th centuries. Danish began to replace Norwegian as the written language, but people still spoke their own Norwegian dialects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economic development in Norway. Norway acquired two important industries during this period: timber trade and mining. Timber trade involved cutting down trees and selling timber, while mining involved extracting minerals, such as iron, from mines. These industries were crucial for exporting goods to other countries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1660, Denmark-Norway became an absolute monarchy, similar to France under Louis XIV. Absolute monarchy means that the king has all the power, or more precisely, all power is derived from the king. The period from 1660 to 1780 was characterized by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>European colonization and the introduction of new plants and goods to Norway, such as tobacco, potatoes, and spices. Potatoes, in particular, became important for Norway. Additionally, Denmark-Norway established its own colonies in Africa, India, and the Caribbean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wars with Sweden. During this period, there were several major wars between Denmark-Norway and Sweden. The wars usually ended in a relatively even manner, with both sides weakened. However, Sweden managed to take Sk\u00e5ne from Denmark (present-day southern Sweden) and Jemtland, Herjedalen, and B\u00e5huslen from Norway.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Enlightenment reached Denmark-Norway, bringing new ideas. The school system in Norway improved, and more people learned to read and write. &#8220;Potato priests&#8221; promoted the cultivation of potatoes, reducing hunger-related deaths. Norwegian-Danish writer Ludvig Holberg wrote several famous plays and became the leading Enlightenment figure from Norway and Denmark.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The late 18th century and the 19th century in Norway were characterized by nationalism and nation-building:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Norway acquired its own constitution and declared independence in 1814. Independence lasted only five months as Norway was forced into a union with Sweden. Nevertheless, the country retained its constitution, and Norway had a much stronger position than under Danish rule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Throughout the 19th century, Norway began to develop a national identity. Norway regained its own written language, Nynorsk, and later Bokm\u00e5l. Norwegian authors wrote about Norway and what it meant to be Norwegian. Norwegian painters depicted an idealized version of Norwegian farmers in Norwegian nature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Industrial Revolution reached Norway during the 19th century. Norway experienced its first industries, railways were established, and the country transformed from a poor agricultural society into a moderately wealthy and modern European nation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The early 20th century in Norway was marked by the First and Second World Wars in Europe, which significantly influenced the development of modern Norway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Norway gained independence from Sweden in 1905 after a 100-year union.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suffrage expanded in Norway. By the end of the 19th century, all men over 25 years of age had the right to vote. In 1913, all women over 25 years of age gained suffrage, making Norway one of the first countries in the world to grant women the right to vote.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Norway remained neutral during the First World War and many benefited economically by transporting goods to Britain. During the Second World War, Norway was occupied by Germany in 1940. The king and the government fled to Britain, and Norway regained its freedom in 1945.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1945 until today, Norway has experienced growth and developed from a moderately wealthy European country into one of the richest nations in the world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Norway rebuilt after the Second World War and experienced significant economic growth until the 1970s. More and more people gained access to cars and modern appliances, such as stoves and televisions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Norway shifted away from neutrality and allied itself with the United States and NATO. Norway was among the founding members of NATO in 1949. The country has been a steadfast ally of the United States and Western Europe throughout the Cold War and up to the present day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant oil discoveries in the North Sea in 1969 transformed Norway into an oil nation. The oil and gas industry flourished in Norway during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, making Norway one of the wealthiest countries in the world. The Government Pension Fund, also known as the Oil Fund, was founded in the 1990s and is today the world&#8217;s largest sovereign wealth fund, with a value of 15.274 billion Norwegian kroner or 1.373 billion US dollars.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>And that concludes a brief summary of Norway&#8217;s history up to the present day.
