How Old is Norse Mythology?
We know that Norse mythology was a part of daily life for people who spoke Old Norse. This language was used from around the year 700. People living in Scandinavia at the time told Norse myths to each other. These myths were an important part of Viking culture, society, and religion. Many scholars, however, believe that Norse myths are even older. They think that Norse mythology originated long before the year 700. For example, archaeological evidence mentioning Odin dates back to the year 400.

I have written a book called Learn Norwegian with Norse Mythology, and it contains an introduction to Norse mythology along with 10 myths that I have adapted to be suitable for people learning Norwegian. Each chapter includes the myth, a summary in both Norwegian and English, a vocabulary list from the chapter, some questions based on the text, and a small bonus text about Norse mythology today. 9.2 – Eirik Raude, the Conqueror of Greenland
Eirik Raude levde på 900-tallet. Kallenavnet «raude», som betyr «rød», fikk han nok på grunn av sitt røde hår og skjegg. Eirik Raude vokste opp på Jæren, men han måtte flykte fra Norge på grunn av et drap. Han og faren hadde drept noen, og måtte derfor flytte til Island. Han er mest kjent for å ha oppretta den første vikingkolonien på Grønland.
