Kalmarunionen

Kalmarunionen blei inngått i seinmiddelalderen. Mange unioner i Europa blei inngått i denne perioden.

I 1397 blei Kalmarunionen offisielt inngått.

The Kalmar Union

The Kalmar Union was created in the Late Middle Ages as a political union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden that lasted from 1397 to 1521. This happened in a European context of royal intermarriage and the creation of unions. For example, Castille and Aragon entered into a union in 1479. The same happened to Poland and Lithuania in 1569. The Kalmar Union should be understood in the light of these general developments.

Margaret I, queen of Denmark, was the protagonist in creating the Kalmar Union. She was married to the king of Norway, Håkon VI Magnusson. When Håkon died in 1380, Margaret and Håkon’s son was hailed as king of Norway; the only problem was that he was not old enough to rule by himself. Hence, Margaret was in charge until her son would grow up. That never happened as he died before he was of age to rule. This was the only son she had, so by now, there was no male heirs to the throne. Margaret also ruler Denmark and she was accepted as ruler in both countries, although she did not have a male heir. This could not continue, so she appointed her sister’s daughter’s son, Eirik, as heir to the throne. Succession was not always easy.

Denmark and Norway also waged a war against the king of Sweden that would last until 1396 when he finally was defeated. In 1396, Eirik was crowned as king of Sweden, and he would be the ruler of all of Scandinavia. In fact, large parts of Finland was also included in the union as it belonged to the kingdom of Sweden. Furthermore, Norway added its islands to the union such as Iceland, the Faroese Islands and Greenland. The Kalmar Union would therefore encompass large part of the Nordic countries. The Kalmar Union was officially created in 1397.

Although the union officially would last until 1523, several problems arose before that. When Margaret died in 1412, Eirik had to manage all alone. He experienced several problems, and Sweden would, in practice, be outside the union for protracted periods of time after 1434. The union was dissolved in 1523 when Sweden once and for all left it and crowned their own king. Norway, however, would continue in the union with Demark. The Kalmar Union was therefore an important first step in creating the union between Denmark and Norway that would last until 1814.
