Heihei! This will be the last episode of the second season of the podcast. Just as the last episode of the previous season, this episode will be in Nynorsk. We will examine how Norse mythology can be seen today.

Norrøn mytologi i dag

Norrøn mytologi har vore viktig i å forma norsk kultur. For eksempel kjem dette fram i språket. På norsk kjem mange av vekedagane frå norrøne gudar. Tysdag (den andre dagen i veka) kjem frå Tyr. Det er Tyr sin dag. Tyr er krigsguden i norrøn mytologi. Han bestemmer kven som vinn i slag. Onsdag kjem frå Odins dag. Torsdag er då Tor sin dag. Fredag er Frigg sin dag. Frigg er kona til Odin.

Det finnes også fleire norske namn som kjem frå norrøn mytologi. For eksempel er det fleire i Noreg som heitar for eksempel Odin, Tor, Trym og Loke blant gutar og Edda, Embla og Idun blant jenter. Dei norrøne namna er framleis populære.

Norrøn mytologi kjem også til syne i populærkulturen. For eksempel er det ein kjent teikneserie frå Marvel som heitar Thor. Dette har også blitt ein kjent filmserie. Tor er her ein del av Marvel sitt univers. Her kan me sjå Loke og Tor saman med hulken.

Norrøn religion kjem også tydeleg fram i TV-serien Vikings frå 2013. Den handlar om vikingar som reiser frå Noreg til Storbritannia. I serien ser me eit blót, altså ei norrøn ofring. Det finnes også fleire norske seriar med vikingar i seg. Ein av dei mest kjente er Vikingane frå 2016. Det er ein humorserie om vikingar.

Det er også mange dataspel som er inspirerte av norrøn mytologi. God of War: Ragnarök er eit eksempel på dette. Det er eit spel som kjem i år, 2021, og som skal handla om norrøn mytologi.

Men det mest utrulege er kanskje at norrøn religion ikkje er daudt. Norrøn religion lev framleis i dag, men i ein moderne form. Åsatru er ei moderne gjenskaping av norrøn religion som finnes i Noreg i dag. Åsatru blei godkjent som norsk trussamfunn i 1996. Då vart åsatru godkjent på same måte som hinduisme, buddhisme, kristendom, islam og andre religionar. Åsatru trur på gudane i norrøn mytologi. Dei som er med i åsatrua er meir opptekne av at folk er med på blot enn kva folk trur på. I åsatru bryr dei seg ikkje så mykje om kva folk trur på. Likevel er ikkje åsatru det same som norrøn religion. Det er ein moderne gjenskaping av norrøn religion, men det er ikkje akkurat det same.

Som de kan sjå er norrøn mytologi framleis veldig synleg i dag. Norrøn mytologi blir brukt i språket vårt, det er ein del av populærkulturen og det lev vidare i åsatru. I neste sesong, sesong tre, kjem me til å gå over til eit anna tema enn norrøn mytologi. I neste sesong skal me snakka om noko anna. Då skal me snakka om norske stader og byar.

Norse Mythology Today

Norse mythology has been important in forming Norwegian culture. This is evident in the language, for example in the days of the week. Tuesday in both Norwegian and English come from “the day of Tyr”, the god of war in Norse mythology. Wednesday in Norwegian, onsdag, comes from “the day of Odin”. Thursday, torsdag, is the day of Thor. Friday, fredag, is the day of Frigg who is the wife of Odin. So, Norse mythology has influenced both English and Norwegian.

Several Norwegian names, that are still popular today, come from Norse mythology such as Odin, Tor, Trym and Loke for boys and Edda, Embla and Idunn for girls.

Norse mythology is also used frequently in popular culture. A famous cartoon from Marvel is named Thor and it includes Norse gods such as Odin and Thor. This is also a movie and in the Marvel universe, where we can see the hulk interact with Thor and Loki.

Norse religion is depicted in the TV-series Vikings from 2013. It tells the story of Norwegian Vikings who travel to Britain. In the series, they show how a blot might have been. There is also a famous Norwegian TV-series about Vikings. It is a humour series called “Vikingane” which means “Vikings” in Nynorsk. It is from 2016 and I believe it is available at Netflix.

Among video games, we can name the upcoming God of War: Ragnarök. The game will be inspired by Norse mythology where we can follow Kratos, from Greek mythology, travelling in Norway and interacting with and probably killing a whole lot of creatures from Norse mythology.

Norse mythology is not only alive in popular culture, but it is also part of the modern belief community called “Åsatru” or “belief in the Aesir gods”. This is a modern recreation of the Norse religion and it is heavily based on Norse mythology and in Norse religion, blots and reverence to the gods. It was accepted as a belief community in Norway in 1996 and it consists of several smaller communities with somewhat differing practices and beliefs. In modern “Åsatru”, it is more important to act and to be a part of the blots, than to believe. This belief system is , as the ancient Norse religion, more focused on practice than on belief.
