Trondheim ligger i Midt-Norge.

Norway’s Geography – An Overview

Norway is a long and narrow country. It is actually the longest country in Europe with its 1752km from the northernmost to the southernmost point of the country. That is approximately the same distance as Oslo to Florence in Italy. Norway is also quite large in area. With the islands Jan Mayen and Svalbard, Norway is 385,000km2, which makes it the sixth largest country in Europe just behind Russia, Ukraine, France, Spain and Sweden. But Norway is also very narrow. One of the narrowest points in Norway is in Hellmobotn which lies in Nordland in the north. It is just 6.3km from the sea to the border of Sweden at Hellmobotn.

The capital of Norway is Oslo, which lies in the eastern part. It has 600,000 inhabitants, making it the largest city in Norway. Bergen, in the west, is the second largest city with 270,000 inhabitants. Trondheim is the third largest with 180,000, and Stavanger is the fourth largest with 130,000.

There are 5.3 million people in Norway. About half of these live in the eastern part of the country which includes the administrative regions Oslo, Vestfold and Telemark, Viken and Innlandet. Regions are called “fylke” in Norwegian. There are 11 regions, or “fylker”, in Norway.

Norway is often roughly portioned into five: East, west, south, central and north. Of these, the eastern part is the largest in inhabitants with 2.6 of the 5.3 million people living in Norway. It is also the second largest in area with its 94,000km2, which is about 30% of the area of Norway excluding the islands Svalbard and Jan Mayen.

The southern part is the smallest in both land area and in inhabitants. It only consists of one fylke, Agder, and is 16,000km2 with 310,000 inhabitants. In area, the southern part is almost six times smaller than the eastern part of the country.

The largest part of Norway is the northern part. It is 113,000km2, or 1/3 of the area of Norway. Although it is large, it is also very sparsely populated with only 480,000 inhabitants. Despite the eastern part being smaller in area, it has about 5.5 times more inhabitants than the northern part of the country.

Central-Norway consists of only one region: Trøndelag. It is 42,000km2 big and has 470,000 inhabitants. Trøndelag lies between South-Norway and the north.

Western Norway is the second largest in inhabitants with 1.36 million people. It consists of three regions and is 58,000km2 big. It lies on the western part of the country with the coast, and the nature is sublimely beautiful with fjords and mountains. When you think of Norwegian nature, you probably think of Western Norwegian nature. I am from the Western part myself, and I can confirm that it is a very beautiful place.

In the coming episodes, we will talk more about Norwegian cities, places, and regions. Hope to see you then!
